The Five Main Lecture Buildings

Most classes at NTU take place in five main lecture buildings: Boya, Xinsheng, Putong, Zonghe, and Gongtong. These are where you’ll likely attend your first-year required courses, general education classes, and even some departmental electives.

Types and Introduction to Credits

Except for the final semester, you must take at least 15 credits per semester. To take fewer than 15 credits due to special circumstances (e.g., health or family issues), you need to apply for approval. The maximum is 25 credits per semester, and taking more also requires approval.

If your GPA for the current semester is above 3.9, you can take up to 31 credits in the next semester. Students in a minor program or specific academic tracks can also take up to 31 credits. If approved for a double major, you can take up to 33 credits.

To check compulsory courses and credit requirements, please refer to the respective department websites.

Required Credits

Credits you must complete before graduation.
These are divided into:

  • University-wide required courses (Chinese, Foreign Language, Physical Fitness, Service Learning)
  • Department-specific required courses

Elective Credits

Divided into:

  • Departmental Elective Required Courses (also called Designated Electives): You must choose a set number of courses or credits from a list of designated departmental courses (e.g., pick 2 out of 5 courses or complete a certain number of credits from department offerings).
  • Non-Departmental Electives: Courses from other departments. Check your department’s regulations to confirm if they count toward graduation credits.

General Education (Gen-Ed) Credits

Each department specifies required Gen-Ed areas (at NTU, divided into 8 areas, A1 to A8). Check your department’s course regulations website for details. Typically, departments require areas less related to their field. For example:

  • Chinese Literature requires A3, A5, A6, A7, A8 (skipping A1, A2, A4, which are related to Chinese).
  • Electrical Engineering requires A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A8 (skipping A6, A7, which are related to engineering).

You must complete the required Gen-Ed credits in the specified areas to meet graduation requirements.

Gen-Ed Areas:

A1: Literature and Arts

A2: Historical Thinking

A3: World Civilization

A4: Philosophy and Moral Reasoning

A5: Civic Awareness and Social Analysis

A6: Mathematics, Digital Competence, and Quantitative Analysis

A7: Material Science

A8: Life Sciences

First-Year Required Courses

  • Chinese Languag: Chinese Language and General Education (Gen-Ed) together require a total of 15 credits. You can choose one of two options:
    • 3 credits of Chinese Language + 12 credits of Gen-Ed
    • 6 credits of Chinese Language + 9 credits of Gen-Ed
You must take at least 3 credits of Chinese Language.
  • Foreign Language: 6 credits total (across two semesters). Some departments allow any foreign language courses to fulfill this requirement, while others (e.g., Political Science) require English courses only. Follow your department’s regulations.
  • Physical Fitness: 1 credit. This course is automatically enrolled in the first semester of your freshman year. If you drop it, you must re-enroll later through a course add process.
  • Service Learning: 0 credits. Divided into Service Learning A and Service Learning B. Check your department’s regulations for details on how to complete these.

Exemption for First-Year English
You can apply to exempt First-Year English through either an “Exam-Based” method (taking a certification exam) or a “Review-Based” method. You only need to complete one method. If approved, you are exempt from First-Year English, which fulfills the Foreign Language required courses and Advanced English courses. You receive 6 credits counted toward graduation, but these credits do not count toward your first-year semester credit totals and will not have a grade.

Application Process
Apply online from early to mid-August (check annual announcements for exact dates) via the “Basic Course Exemption” section on the NTU Freshman Service Website. Upload electronic copies of relevant certificates to the system. For more details, visit the NTU Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures website.

Course Selection Process

The course schedule on the NTU Course Website is for simulation only. Only the schedule on the Course Selection System reflects the courses you have actually selected. Make sure to select during the official selection period via the Course Selection System and confirm your selection is successful.

Simulated Registration: https://course.ntu.edu.tw/en

The NTU Course Website allows you to check detailed course information, such as class times, credits, instructors, and classroom locations. You can also add courses you’re interested in to a course list and, when selection opens, import them directly into the official Course Selection System with one click—saving time and effort!

See: Detailed Simulated Course Selection Process

Official Selection: NTU Online Course Selection System

Timing and Basic Rules

  1. After adding courses in the simulated registration, log in to the NTU Online Course Registration System. You must first complete the Foreign Language Proficiency Survey. Answer honestly, as many language courses restrict native speakers.
  2. After completing the survey, enter the system and click Import Simulated Courses to start official registration.
  3. Courses previously added on the NTU Course Website will appear on this page.
  4. Begin ranking your course preferences. Tip: Based on experience, skip numbers when ranking (e.g., 1, 3, 5) to make later adjustments easier.
  5. Check your registered courses under Course Registration Status. Black text indicates confirmed courses (e.g., auto-enrolled required courses), while blue text indicates courses pending a lottery.
  6. In the Drop Courses section, you can drop selected courses or preferences, including auto-enrolled required courses. This is useful for students planning to change majors.
  7. View your confirmed courses on the Class Schedule to plan your time effectively.
  8. After importing all desired courses, wait for the first round of course allocation. Note: Your preference rankings are compared only with your own selected courses, not with other students’ rankings. Courses are allocated based on your preference order in the following cases:

    1. Time conflicts
    2. Multiple sections of the same course
    3. Reaching the credit limit for the semester

When these situations occur, the system prioritizes courses with higher preference rankings and drops those with lower rankings.
